Through structure, investment objective, management style and plan mutual funds can be classified in the following manner.
  1. Based on Structure – Open Ended Fund, Close Ended Fund, Interval Funds
  2. Based on Asset class – Equity Funds, Income/Debt Funds, Hybrid Funds, Solution oriented and others
  3. Based on Plans – Growth Plan, Dividend Plan, Reinvestment Plan
  4. Based on Management – Actively managed, passively managed
Among Asset class, within each category there are many subcategories introduced by the SEBI
  1. Equity Schemes (12 sub-categories)
  2. Income/Debt Schemes (16 sub-categories)
  3. Hybrid Schemes (6 sub-categories)
  4. Solution oriented Schemes (2 sub-categories)
  5. Other Schemes (2 sub-categories)
